Outside it smells of snow, inside of cinnamon – and somewhere between cookie dough and wrapping paper the question arises: what are we actually toasting with? We've done mulled wine. Sparkling wine alone feels a bit un-Christmassy. The answer has been sitting on our distillery shelf for a while now: the Baked Apple Spritz.

Our Winter-Apfel is a baked apple liqueur refined with cinnamon – the liquid memory of grandma's oven. When it meets cold Prosecco and a splash of soda, something lovely happens: winter's cosiest flavour becomes an elegant, sparkling aperitif. Warm in taste, cold in the glass – the fireplace among spritzes.

The recipe

Difficulty: effortless · Time: 3 minutes · Occasion: Advent, Christmas parties, Christmas Eve before the presents

Ingredients

  • 4 cl Krugmann Winter-Apfel (baked apple liqueur with cinnamon)
  • 10 cl chilled Prosecco
  • A splash of soda water
  • Ice cubes
  • Apple slice & cinnamon stick to garnish

Method

  1. Fill a wine glass with ice.
  2. Pour in the Winter-Apfel, top with Prosecco.
  3. Add a splash of soda, stir gently.
  4. Garnish with an apple slice and a cinnamon stick – it doubles as stirrer and aromatic garnish.

Three ideas for your Christmas party

1. Infused garnish: soak apple slices in a little Winter-Apfel beforehand – an aromatic garnish you get to eat at the end. 2. Zero-proof round: cloudy apple juice, cinnamon and non-alcoholic sparkling wine – the little brother for designated drivers. 3. Festive welcome: rim the glasses with a cinnamon-sugar mix.

The bottle behind it

Krugmann Winter-Apfel – baked apple liqueur refined with cinnamon, from our distillery in Meinerzhagen where we've been distilling since 1867. Also lovely neat and lightly chilled, or as a shot in mulled wine.

FAQ

Can I serve the baked apple spritz warm?

A spritz lives on its bubbles and belongs cold. For a hot serve, try our Orancello Hot Punch – or Winter-Apfel in hot apple juice (4 cl to 12 cl, don't boil).

Which Prosecco works best?

A dry (brut) Prosecco balances the liqueur's sweetness best. If you prefer it softer, go extra dry.

What's the difference between baked apple liqueur and apple liqueur?

Baked apple liqueur recreates the roasted aroma of oven-baked apples with spices like cinnamon – darker, warmer, more Christmassy. Classic apple liqueur tastes of fresh, green apple.
